Strange Fruit caused a negative sensation in some circles when it was number one on the hit parade and I imagine there are people who could still get pretty worked up over it today.Leslie Morganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15702472429383639709noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7195616894993495285.post-72386015993412401122009-10-06T15:15:33.288-07:002009-10-06T15:15:33.288-07:00The reason I know that particular Billie Holiday s...The reason I know that particular Billie Holiday song is because I have this George Gershwin CD (I have eclectic musical tastes) and she just happens to be on it. I have heard her most famous song "Strange Fruit" but I'm embarrased to admit that I just now had to look up the song on Wikipedia to find out what you meant by the "r" word. Oh, yeah, that's right. My brother once had Billie Holiday playing at his house. I'm going to have to ask if he has a CD and if he'll let me borrow it.Kirkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02155991693956178030noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7195616894993495285.post-87051261485991412432009-10-06T15:03:04.790-07:002009-10-06T15:03:04.790-07:00You'd know, Badge, and you taught me. I love "Strange Fruit" (Billie) and thought to put those lyrics up, but thinking back to that day on Erin O'Brien's blog and the morons and the "r" word being tossed around at everyone . . . I figured that Strange Fruit lyrics might stir up more controversy than I'm willing to mediate today. I now have on a CD that has several Billie/Lester Young tracks. He was her partner who dubbed her "Lady 'Day".Leslie Morganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15702472429383639709noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7195616894993495285.post-72670023316632661752009-10-06T13:51:35.968-07:002009-10-06T13:51:35.968-07:00Love the way Billie Holliday sings "Summertim...Love the way Billie Holliday sings "Summertime" Of course, there's a lot to be said for Janis Joplin's version, too.Kirkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02155991693956178030noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7195616894993495285.post-20036131604806413612009-10-06T12:33:01.980-07:002009-10-06T12:33:01.980-07:00I think those of us who are blessed/cursed to be t...I think those of us who are blessed/cursed to be the deepest feeling individuals ARE drawn to one another.Leslie Morganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15702472429383639709noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7195616894993495285.post-17017416408080730892009-10-06T10:23:51.906-07:002009-10-06T10:23:51.906-07:00Sounds like a soul I'd like to know. Hugs are always good.

Although it is said that her bio is full of inaccuracies, it is likely that she was born to a prostitute and was put into the business herself by the time she was 12. She was one of those people who seems to feel things more deeply than others. Her highs were over the top and when she was down, she went to the depths of hell. She went from man to man - deep, intense, dysfunctional relationships. And then there was that pesky long-term heroin/opium habit. And through it all she was lovely to look at and sang like an angel.
